The Sensational Steve Doran Show is another one of the pseudo-comic coming of age style teen shows that chronicles the life of one supposedly average girl. It was first aired in 1985 when then star of the series was still a Zygote, and three rather boring and commercially disappointing seasons followed. Assuming the concept had failed, the show’s writers were about to give up when middle aged women the world over remembered that they enjoyed the embarrassing behaviour of toddlers. The ratings picked up and the show was saved from cancellation, but didn’t really acquire a following until 1997. That September the title character joined a secondary school and the creators stopped pretending that she was normal. In the subsequent seasons Steve Doran skied into a tree, was involved in two serious traffic accidents, suffered from depression for a year, visited Italy, the Czech Republic, Holland, Ireland, Belgium, Scotland, The Dominican Republic, France, Malta and America [in spite of being a financial disaster], lived in a condemned building, got into Nottingham University even though she fakes most of her academic ability and was made president of her University Debate Society, A Worlds Public Speaking Finalist and the Mayoress of Dartford.

Producers of the movie The Truman Show have always denied that TSSDS was their inspiration, pointing out they key differences in the concepts. Steve Doran is a fictional character and the world she inhabits is written by script writers, whereas Truman was an average person filmed without his knowledge. All of Steve’s friends and family are fictional characters who only exist in the parallel universe of the show, if you believe in such things…

The Character

The title character of The Sensational Steve Doran Show was originally going to be called Heather, but the little brat they got to play her refused to answer to anything other than Steve. The show’s title was hastily changed when the producers realised than nobody watched it anyway and not even child actors wanted the part.

Steve Doran is a 18 19 20 21 year old girl, currently taking a Post Graduate Diploma in Radio Journalism at the University of Nottingham Trent. This University didn't exist, even in the fictional setting of the show, until producers realised that Steve was about to graduate and they needed a way to extend the franchise and fast. Before this she was studying politics at The University of Nottingham. The shows producers named the fictional city after the sheriff in the Robin Hood legends and say that there are elements of their own student experiences in the invented University. Steve lived at a student radio station and spent the last few seasons focusing on a career in media, but later switches her attention to world domination. Rumours suggest an end of season finale in which Steve is central to the apocalypse. Steve has a keen interest in debating and was been doing it for most of her life, although she never gets any better and the suggestion is that she never will. Most fans agree that she’ll never speak Spanish either, but she keeps trying. She lives is a house on Sesame Street that will declare its independence in the next season before being completely ignored by the international community.

  • She has a six year old alter ego that she knows about but who doesn’t know about her. This alter ego tends to appear whenever she is stressed or trying to annoy her boyfriend Myles
  • She has a two year old alter ego that only appears when she is trying to annoy her boyfriend Myles
  • Steve has an obsessive personality and has been through phases as diverse as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, her sixth form politics teacher and Tuna Mayonnaise and Cheese Sandwiches. She is currently obsessing over Doctor Who, Greggs Cheese and Ham Slices and most of her new lecturers
  • Steve Doran is famous for her outlandish nail varnish and ever changing hair colours. In 2004 the show’s producers struck a deal with Revlon and L’Oreal, who paid around $2,000,000 for the show to stop associating their products with Steve
  • Steve used to work at Bluewater Shopping Centre during holiday time, a fictional shopping complex built in a hole in the ground. This storyline ended abruptly in 2006, when Clearwater Shopping Centre and a number of it’s staff filed a law suit. They claimed that one of the shows writers was an ex-employee and that the job and many of the characters were spiteful and obvious caricatures. The judge was inclined to agree, but having met the Clearwater employees she ruled that they deserved it

    Steve Doran is played by Rebecca Markson, one of the most beautiful and talented actresses in Hollywood. She has to go through hours of make up on every show in order to look like the chubby student, and has won awards for her work on the show. Sophisticated and well connected, she is often complimented for playing a bossy lunatic so well – especially in a genre where people so often play themselves.
